Why the city Maia?

ree

🏛️ History

The city of Maia, located in the metropolitan area of Porto, is one of the oldest in Portugal, with evidence of human occupation dating back to prehistoric times—specifically the Neolithic period. Discoveries of artifacts and rudimentary dwellings from that era confirm the region has been inhabited for thousands of years, likely since the 9th century.Despite this long history, Maia was only officially recognized as a municipality in the 12th century, during the territorial expansion of the Kingdom of Portugal. Its most significant development, however, came much later—especially during the Industrial Revolution.Among its many historical milestones, the most defining occurred after the Carnation Revolution on April 25, 1974. Following substantial investment in infrastructure and public services, Maia was officially granted city status on June 23 of the same year. This recognition highlighted its growing relevance within the Porto metropolitan area.
